The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. Team, established in 1980 and originally consisting of twelve members, is currently comprised of fourteen specially selected deputies that are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to their regular assigned duties S.W.A.T. members train as a team on a monthly basis to enhance the skills and abilities of each individual. Development of physical strength and spontaneity of reflexes is stressed. These individuals possess such positive qualities as independence of mind, self-discipline, motivation and physical stamina in adverse conditions. S.W.A.T. members are highly trained in the use of special weapons and tactics for the purpose of handling high-risk incidents. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. Team handles barricaded suspects, hostage situations, school violence, high-risk arrests/search warrant service, and various other situations requiring their specialized training and expertise.
A Crisis Negotiation Team is assigned when the situation warrants. Components of the S.W.A.T. Team consist of Entry Teams, Arrest Teams, Sniper/Scout Teams, Hostage Negotiators, the Hazardous Disposal Unit and a Paramedic Team.
Hazardous Disposal Unit
The mission of our Hazardous Disposal Unit (Bomb Squad) is to render safe and efficient disposal of explosive devices, suspicious packages, weapons of mass destruction and other hazardous items.
Faced with all manner of disturbed, depressed and deadly people, hostage negotiators have a hectic job. While their chief duty is to prevent murders and suicides, hostage negotiators must probe the situation at hand, speak on behalf of both the criminal and hostage, and still perform their normal duties as a Deputy Sheriff.
