The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Training and Educational Facility is located at 39395 Pine Street in Pearl River, Louisiana. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:30pm.

The Training Center is approximately 60,000 square feet and is comprised of our T-Wing classroom section, a library that accommodates up to 60 persons, a fully functional cafeteria that can feed 100 per sitting and a gymnasium with male and female locker rooms.

The center also has a computer lab, a weight training room, a defensive tactics room and a media learning center. All classrooms are equipped with dedicated audio visual equipment.

The Training Division provides and coordinates all training efforts for St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel. The mission is to provide the highest quality professional law enforcement training possible.

All academy instructors have completed the Louisiana POST/Adult Learning Module and are required to update their lesson plans and training materials annually.

Additionally, there are more than 30 Adjunct Instructors currently employed in other areas of the agency. Many of them have also attended the Adult Learning Module.

Certifications

Our Instructors have received certifications from various organizations, including the American Red Cross, POST III Instructor Developmental, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, Stinger Spike Systems, Weapon Retention and Disarm, Radar/Lidar, Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT), Mandock Defensive Tactics System (MDTS), Sabre Law Enforcement Aerosol Projectors, National Academy for Professional Driving (NAPD), Taser X26, Karbon Arms, Shocknife and Police Groundfighting.

In-Service Training

The Training Division conducts mandatory in-service training programs to ensure that skills and certifications are maintained and that employees receive the most current updates and instruction possible. Deputies are required to maintain annual certifications in first-aid, firearms, defensive tactics, legal issues and recent court decisions.

Personnel are also provided in-service training in night-firing techniques, high-speed pursuit driving, traffic stops, and leadership as well as policy and procedure updates.

Basic Academy Training

Prior to assuming a deputy sheriff’s position with full arrest powers, St. Tammany Parish Deputies must first complete Basic Academy Training. All full-time, part-time and reserve sworn law enforcement officers in Louisiana must successfully complete a Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) approved basic law enforcement academy.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Basic Training Academy consists of 20 weeks (800 hours) of basic law enforcement training. In addition to St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies, the Basic Training Academy accepts qualified Reserve law enforcement officers from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
